CREDITS
The Canadian Jewish Virtual Museum and Archives was
initiated by Congregation Shaar Hashomayim in 2001, with the
assistance of a grant from Canadian Heritage. Since the fall
of 2003 the staff of the Canadian
Jewish Congress Charities Committee National Archives,
Montreal, is responsible for the coordination and maintenance
of this site.

SITE DEVELOPMENT HISTORY:
Under the leadership of Dr. Mel Hershenfield, the Canadian
Jewish Virtual Museum and Archives was initiated by Congregation
Shaar Hashomayim, Canadas oldest Ashkenazi synagogue.
With the following organizations a grant application was made
to Canadian Heritage to establish Canadas first online
museum of Canadian Jewish history.
Centre communautaire juif, is the cultural, social,
and recreational centre of the Sepahrdic Community of Quebec.
Established in 1957.
Communauté sépharade du Québec,
represents the Sephardic community of Quebec. Established
in 1963.
Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, is the oldest Ashkenazi
synagogue in Canada. Established in 1846.
Holocaust Literature Research Institute (University
Western Ontario), holds one of the largest collection of survivor
testimony outside of Israel. Established in 1992.
Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, is the oldest synagogue
in Canada. Established in 1768.
Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, is the oldest reform synagogue
in Canada. Established in 1882.
United Talmud Torahs of Montreal, is the oldest Jewish
educational institution in Canada. Established in 1896.
