Weiser and Rosen sow ritual art on the web By HEATHER SOLOMON
When Barbara Weiser went back to school 30 years after earning her bachelor's degree in sociology, she had no idea that her research toward a master's degree in Jewish studies at Concordia University would turn into a cross-Canada treasure hunt. ...she visits synagogues, mikvahs, Jewish community centres, seniors' homes and even cemeteries to document and catalogue Canadian Jewish ritual art with the aim of enhancing public knowledge of art in Jewish buildings. All the while, she is thinking about how some Canadian Jewish communities have developed an artistic vocabulary unlike their European forebears, and even unlike their fellow Jews in other parts of the country. ... Over the course of her studies, she has been sharing selected images with Canadian Jewish Congress Charities Committee (CJCCC) National Archives to put on the Canadian Jewish Virtual Museum and Archives website at www.cjvma.org.[Link here for full text as shown on the www.cjccc.ca web site] |
